Quiet Dice

>> March 3, 2011

I'm all about using dice in my math centers.  However containing those active little hands is a chore.  There are always a few who want to roll too hard to throw it on the table. I've seen cute ideas where teachers take lids from Pringles cans and have the children roll the dice in those to keep them contained, but we don't eat Pringles that often.  I was at the dollar spot in Target and found these:

They have been perfect for the children to roll their dice on.  The pads are high enough that they act as a container/boundary and soft so that they muffle the sound.  How do you manage dice during games and center time?

I have lined small baskets with felt and had the children roll the dice in the basket. It also cuts down on the noise and lost dice! Thanks for sharing ideas on your blog!

Noisey dice can make you crazy. I found soft cubes that have clear pockets that I love, love, love! Come and visit my site and check them out..
Hope this is helpful.

I have this problem in my classroom too. We play A LOT of dice games. Walmart has a set of four bowls for a dollar. They are colorful, plastic and just large enough to throw the dice into but not too big. I purchased enough for my whole class (only $6!). They stack nicely too so storage isn't a problem.
